Detective Sergeant Paul Lefford said: “There is a lot of communication about this incident on social media, much of which is speculation. I would urge people to avoid fuelling the situation with rumours as it is not helpful to the investigation or to your community.

“This appears to have been an isolated incident and we are investigating the circumstances in a bid to identify the man.

“We have increased patrols in the area and are working closely with the schools in the area to ensure children are familiar with the stranger danger principle.

“Anyone who has experienced a similar approach by a man fitting the above description should call police.”

If you saw the incident or have any information about the man’s identity please contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101, quoting incident number 725 on 3 December 2012, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

“I don't wish to rub salt in the wounds or point blame as such, but can somebody please tell me why a 12 year old child was walking or out alone at 7:40pm at night - at this time of year when it is pitch black by that time and has been for a few hours?

Too many people are giving their children far too much independence at way to young of an age. I do not believe in bubble wrapping your child but when I was this age there is no way I would have been allowed out after dark, and I certainly will not be allowing my children out at this age at this time when it is very dark.”
