Two injury-time goals from Paul Hayes sent Notts County

crashing out in the first round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy

against League One Scunthorpe at Glanford Park tonight.

Richard Butcher put the Magpies ahead after just nine

minutes, directing a delightful left-foot effort past Iron

keeper Josh Lillis and into the bottom corner of the net, after

Sean Canham had headed Ben Fairclough’s cross into his path on

the edge of the penalty area.

Russell Hoult then made two great saves to deny the home

side.

He parried a stinging long-range effort from winger Martyn

Woolford and then tipped a Grant McCann free-kick past his

left-hand upright at full-stretch.

Scunthorpe piled the pressure on Notts in the closing

minutes of the first half with left-back Marcus Williams

raiding forward and unleashing a powerful effort that flew just

over the crossbar.

They started the second half the same way and Matt Sparrow

thundered a long-range effort against the crossbar on 48

minutes.

A great last-ditch tackle from Adam Tann then denied Ben May

from close-range and Canham blocked a powerful strike from

Krystian Pearce, as the Iron continued to threaten the Magpies’

lead.

Notts replied just after the hour mark with Matt Hamshaw

playing a neat interchange with Delroy Facey and racing into

the box. He fired an early low effort that Lillis parried, and

the rebound fell to Canham who rifled a first-time shot that

the Iron keeper smothered.

The Magpies made a double substitution on 71 minutes, with

Myles Weston and Neil MacKenzie coming on. Weston made an

immediate impact, racing down the left wing and crossing into

the penalty area for Facey, but the striker sent a glancing

header just wide of the far post.

May directed a free header wide of the post from a corner on

78 minutes and Jonathan Forte then hit the foot of the post

from the edge of the penalty area in the closing stages.

Tann was stretchered off with a facial injury in the dying

minutes, following an aerial challenge with May.

And then the Iron levelled in injury-time, with Paul Hayes

heading past Hoult at the far post from Ian Morris’ corner.

Hayes then netted the winner from close-range in the third

minute of injury-time after Notts failed to clear a long

throw-in.
