My week Victoria Stevens Director at Nottingham ethical website developer Make Hay and the Green Hosting company
Monday Meeting with husband and business partner Jez to plan the coming week. He's busy designing and developing websites and supporting clients over the next few days, so I'll take on other roles in the business. We've worked together for several years – and our skills are compatible. First job is to deal with a few Green Hosting support queries. One is a client wanting to upgrade his hosting account because he's expanding his website. Another is some updates to the Attenborough Nature Centre website. Later, I book a meeting with web design clients Climate East Midlands for some ongoing work and organise refresher website training with Leeds Parent Partnership Service.
Tuesday I set aside most of today for marketing. Firstly, I discuss working with Future Factory at Nottingham Trent University. They're going to help us implement a new marketing strategy. Then I write our e-newsletter and put together a blog about one of our clients, Cycle Hire UK. It should be good publicity for them. I've been doing a series of interviews with a lecturer from the University of Nottingham who is researching ethical business. She's writing a guest article for our blog and sent me a first draft to read. It's great. End the day by updating our Green Hosting client portfolio.
Wednesday As website developers, we always have projects at different stages: planning, visual design and development of content management systems, plus we're usually waiting to hear about bids we've put in. We're delighted to hear today that our proposal for design of a large local organisation's website has been successful in the first round and we've been invited to meet the management, who will make a final decision. A thoroughly enjoyable and inspiring evening at Antenna in Nottingham, organised by the 2W web designers' group.
Thursday I've been working with a new client about plans for her first website and today I pull all the notes together from our meetings. This is a big piece of work because the planning of a website is the most important part. It's about drawing together her business objectives, what we know about her audience and her plans for the future. We've developed many websites and each one is unique – tailored specifically to the client. An ongoing project that we're working on with Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust is reaching one of its milestones, which is the content gathering. So, I go through the content and prepare for creating wireframes for the design. These are like blueprints for the website layouts.
Friday A not very exciting job this morning is the accounts – paying in cheques, writing and paying invoices and sending out renewals for upcoming annual Green Hosting subscriptions. In the afternoon, among emails and ongoing pieces of work, I spend some time reading and catching up with learning.
Saturday Outside of work, I like to do creative things, including crafts and gardening. In between meeting friends and spending time relaxing with Jez, I finish off painting a beautiful vintage dressing table that I've been refurbishing.
Sunday A trip to the nursery to stock up on more plants for the garden. We've worked really hard on the garden this year. A quiet end to the day, which is great to help me feel refreshed for another busy week.
