A FRONT page story in the Independent on Saturday, November 13, was headlined "Animal rights betrayal" and referred to plans drawn up by the previous Labour Government to improve the care of animals and birds on farms, circuses, shooting estates, etc.

It explained these measures had been scrapped by the coalition Government, the driving force being James Paice, MP for south-east Cambridgeshire.

The article went on to say that not only were these welfare measures not to be introduced, but DeFRA, Mr Paice's department, had decided not to pursue a number of prosecutions for cruelty reported by undercover investigators.

It is hard to understand how any reasonable person would oppose the introduction of these long overdue measures.
