Williams: Briscoe desperate to star for Stags

Friday, November 20, 2009, 15:22

RYAN Williams believes the return of Louis Briscoe could not have come at a better time for Mansfield Town.

The right-winger cum forward made his comeback from a knee problem with an impressive cameo substitute appearance in Tuesday night's FA Cup exit to Forest Green Rovers.

It was Briscoe's first involvement since he sustained the injury falling down the stairs prior to last month's trip to Eastbourne Borough.

Now, as the Sports make the return trip to Field Mill today, Briscoe is back in contention for a starting place.

And with the Stags in the middle of a run of seven games in the space of 22 days, Williams is pleased to see the former Port Vale trainee back in the frame.

"Louis put in a fantastic performance when he came on against Forest Green and showed what he is all about," he said.

"He had an injury which was very unfortunate and not expected and it has been a frustrating time for him.

"His coming back into the squad is like a breath of fresh air and we know a fit Louis Briscoe is a massive plus for us.

"It is a good time to have him involved because we have got a lot of games leading into Christmas.

"He, along with everyone else in the squad, will have their part to play in those matches. Football is a squad game these days.

"I know Louis is champing at the bit to get back in the team and he's been working very hard in the gym to keep himself fit while he's been out."

Williams is delighted the Stags have another home game so quickly after their 2-1 midweek defeat to two Conal Platt goals.

He said: "From a player's point of view, having another game straight away is the best thing that can happen.

"You don't have time to sit around and mope about the cup game because you have another match to prepare for.

"If you can win it, then it will help get that disappointment out of the system."
