McParland: Too early to talk promotion

Saturday, October 11, 2008, 07:30

IT is too early to say if Notts County are capable of staging a promotion challenge in League Two, according to Ian McParland.

The Magpies' boss has been hugely encouraged by his side's eight-game unbeaten league run.

After back-to-back wins against Aldershot and Port Vale, Notts are just two points adrift of the play-off places.

But McParland is refusing to get carried away.

He believes Notts must show the same kind of consistency over the next two months to be considered genuine promotion contenders.

Ahead of Monday night's game against fourth-placed Brentford at Meadow Lane, he said: "If we are in the same position after 20 games you can say we are playing with good consistency – but not after nine.

"Things can change very quickly because we have two tough matches coming up.

"We have to keep our heads down and keep working hard.

"We are still a mile off being the finished article.

"The way we have been playing is encouraging, and I knew results would come.

"But we have still got a long, long way to go.

"A couple of defeats and we could be down near the bottom. Another couple of wins and we could be up there in the play-offs."

McParland praised his players for maintaining their high standards since the start of the season.

He said: "It is a credit to them and their belief in what we are trying to do and how we are trying to play the game.

"Every time they train it is a pleasure to work with them.

"They want to do well. They are a good bunch.

"There will be ups and downs between now and the end of the season. There are always lots of twists and turns.

"I am just hoping there will be more ups than downs."
