McParland: Notts need to turn draws into wins

Tuesday, October 14, 2008, 08:08

IAN McParland today said Notts County need to start winning tight games if they want to challenge higher up the League Two table.

The Magpies' boss was frustrated as his side drew for the seventh time in nine league games against Brentford at Meadow Lane last night. After the 1-1 draw, he said: "We are still unbeaten but we have had too many draws for me. We should have killed off teams like Shrewsbury, Accrington, Bournemouth and Darlington".

He added: "If we can start doing that then maybe we can challenge but not until then."

Jamie Forrester struck his fourth league goal of the season from the penalty spot to cancel out Glenn Poole's first half opener.

McParland said the Notts defence was caught out for the visitors' goal, with captain Mike Edwards playing Charlie MacDonald onside as he broke away down the right and crossed for the Bees' winger to score.

"We deserved to win but we didn't," he added. "We shot ourselves in the foot in the first half. We cleared the ball and it came back in as we were coming out and one of their lads (MacDonald) was able to get in behind.

"It was totally against the run of play. They got their goal but we came out fighting and we didn't panic. We kept to our game-plan, and that takes courage.

"We got what we deserved with the penalty but I am disappointed for the lads because of the effort and the football they played that we didn't go on to win.

"We were fantastic in the second half but we just have to show better quality and the players have to show more belief in themselves."
