'It's kind of a cure and a blessing...'
How did you get into music?
I honestly couldn't tell you – it all just kind of happened. My parents were big music people. My dad played bass in a couple of bands. They've always supported me.

Solo venture: Nottingham-based Joshua Keogh.
What's the best gig you've ever played?
I'm still a newbie! I've only been playing and writing this stuff since late September. So the opportunities I've had to play shows have really been unreal. I think my favourite was probably the Slaughtered Lamb in London. The atmosphere in there is amazing – anyone and everyone who plays my kind of music should try and get some shows there.
Which singers or bands do you look to for inspiration?
I love Bon Iver, Coldplay and Ben Howard. I used to listen to a lot more underground stuff but since moving to Nottingham I've started to write and listen to more traditionally, mainstream music. Obviously not Beyonce or Shakira... although I can still appreciate them.
You were recently in a band called Montaine but decided to part ways and go solo. How does performing solo differ from being part of a band?
Way more nerve-racking. You don't have your mates to rely on. That's kind of a cure and a blessing because you have complete control but if it all goes wrong, there's no one else to look to but yourself. I am actually starting to put a live band together, though. I've some huge shows coming up in March and April that I'll be doing solo but hopefully from then on I'll have found a decent bunch to play live with.
When and where is your next gig?
The Garage in London on March 6 supporting the Silver Seas (formerly the Bees). I've had to pull out of quite a few recently because of a throat infection. I'm going to try and pull together some last minute shows for February but The Garage is my next big scheduled show.
Which venue in Nottingham would you most like to play?
You have got to say Rock City! It would be hilarious and amazing to be able to stand on that massive stage alone and sing some songs you wrote. I like the Rescue Rooms as well – so going back there would be nice.
