What's the best way to get to work in Nottingham?
WE spoke to three Capital One employees who travel to their city centre office from Hucknall.
Each one takes different form of transport.
Car - Stuart Mather:
Total door to desk travel time – 45 minutes
Petrol cost – £20pw (split between two).
"I live in Hucknall which has a variety of transport links to Nottingham, however I choose to drive into work.
"My girlfriend and I both work at city centre companies so it works out cheaper for us to share the cost of fuel.
"It also means the journey to work is more comfortable and we have the added benefit of flexibility.
"There is normally congestion along the Hucknall bypass down to Moor Bridge.
"Then there is usually some more traffic along Hucknall Road and a little more as you get towards Mansfield Road.
"I drop my girlfriend off and then drive into Capital One. I am normally at my desk at 8.25am.
"I'm fortunate enough to have a parking space at work. Capital One has a limited number of spaces as it encourages its employees to take advantage of its close proximity to train, tram and bus stations."
Train – Kathryn Boettcher:
Total door to desk travel time – 35 minutes.
Total cost – £2.60 a day, £13pw.
"I live in Ravenshead, but as there being no train service from that area, I travel to Hucknall to catch the train.
"I normally leave my house at approximately 8.10am. My husband works in Hucknall so sometimes he'll drop me off in time for a later train to Nottingham at 8.28am.
"Occasionally I'll drive to Hucknall train station and drop my car off at the free car park.
"Sometimes the trains are a couple of minutes late and it has been known for a train not to turn up at all.
"On the whole though, the service is pretty reliable. It takes about 15 minutes to get to Nottingham.
"Sometimes the train can be a little overcrowded, especially if there is just one carriage, but I normally get a seat.
"I don't drive to Nottingham because it's stressful and I don't use the tram because it takes longer and makes me feel travel sick.
"I like the train as I can sit and read the paper or listen to my iPod."
Tram – Pete Brown:
Total door to desk travel time – 55 minutes.
Total cost – £2.70 a day, £13.50pw.
"I live on the edge of Hucknall and catch the tram from Moor Bridge.
"I normally leave the house at 7.10am to catch the 7.30am tram. The trams are always on time and very reliable.
"I'm usually able to get a seat in the morning. The tram gets especially busy between the Forest and city centre stops and is a lot busier in the evenings."

“I agree, two wheels good. Get a bicycle! It doesn't eat up the petrol money, it's at least as fast as other city traffic, easier to park, and the daily exercise makes you feel great.”

“I can't afford to buy a motorcycle (would probably kill myself sooner rather than later if i did have one). I pay road tax and insurance on my car whether i use it daily or not. I can't afford to get the bus to work currently £5.20 per day. Plus as Rob points out, I don't want to sit with the great unwashed!”

“But if cost, time and congestion are all of the issues, forget the car, the bus or the tram and get a two-wheeler. Less than half the cost of a car, less than half the time of any of the other options to get to work (measured door to door), and you don't have to mix with the great unwashed on smelly buses or trams or hang about at bus/tram stops.”

“If you get an Easyrider the Tram works out to nearer £10 per week. I suspect a season ticket for the train would be cheaper too.
And the car costs more than just petrol, there's road tax, insurance, maintenance, depreciation etc which would make that more expensive than the £20 per week quoted.
Use public transport, its better for the planet and for your wallet!”
