RESIDENTS last night called for 24 speed humps in Carlton to be removed.

The bumps in Cavendish Road and Foxhill Road were installed in 2004, at a cost of £300,000.

But residents say they do not slow drivers down, damage residents' cars and divert traffic onto neighbouring roads.

Speaking at the meeting in the Cavendish pub, Pauline Musson, of Cavendish Road, said: "HGVs and cement lorries belt straight over the humps to save going through the speed cameras on other roads."

Resident John Thorp, 73, said traffic in Cromford Avenue, off Cavendish Road, had increased by 22% since the humps were introduced.

Before the meeting, he said drivers which had used Cavendish Road were using other streets instead. "They go racing up Cromford Avenue now. I've lost two cats because of it," he said.

The Evening Post yesterday reported that Inspector Mark Towlson said the humps slowed down police response times and other traffic calming measures could be used instead.

At last night's meeting, Coun Bruce Laughton, Conservative prospective parliamentary candidate for Gedling, said there were other effective ways of slowing drivers down, such as flashing interactive signs.

Resident Tom Butcher, a former police sergeant, said people reacted more positively to signs than humps or speed cameras.

He said: "I have not yet come across and argument in favour of speed humps. Some people think they slow people down, but they don't."

Residents said they wanted the humps removed in favour of speed cameras or interactive speed signs.

Outside the meeting, Notts Police Authority chair Coun John Clarke, a county councillor for Carlton East, said: "I have never liked bumps. I think there are better ways. I would much prefer chicanes."

But outside the meeting, Coun Stella Smedley, Notts County Council cabinet member for Transport, said speed humps were an effective way to save lives.

"Nobody likes them. None of us do. But we don't put road humps in just for fun."

“They are a pain, they damage your car and in some cases they're dangerous. How many times have you been driving down a humped road and all of a sudden an on coming vehicle darts out into your path to avoid hitting a hump. I'm surprised there hasn't been any accidents like this. The last thing you expect when you're driving along is to suddenly find an on coming car directly in your path. It's madness and they need removing.”

“Inspector Mark Towlson should stand and have a look at the speed his officers travel up cavendish road with blues and twos. I have seen on several occassions police cars travelling at least 70mph, sometimes two together, with no more than 15ft between them”

“They don't need removing, they can be cheaply planed to 30mm below the surface and a new top surface laid. I doubt they will be removed, because thanks to two-Jags John Prescott and his New Labour lackies, the council has to get it's funding through specific projects which enforce the New Labour mantra. The council will have applied for £300,000 to install these concrete blocks, but if they are removed they would have to pay it back (see Gedling/Burton Joyce road-plug too). The problem is, councils can only exist these days and keep themselves in work by applying for pots of money from central government for oppressive schemes.”

“You know- I'm thinking of standing at the next General Election as an Independent in my ward, along the lines of David Such(Screaming Lord as he was known)-. My manifesto will be to ABOLISH ALL SPEED BUMPS IN NOTTINGHAM- I'll lose my deposit, of course, but you know i've got a hunch i'll poll quite a few votes from the fed up folk of this city , and put a huge dent in the polling figures of the other candidates.Mmmm.What colour should I choose for my rosette!!!!!!!!”
