Six survive as crash car flips over

Monday, December 01, 2008, 08:29

SIX people had a lucky escape after their car crashed into a wall and overturned.

The blue Vauxhall Corsa demolished the wall as it travelled along High Road, in Chilwell, just before midnight on Saturday.

Residents heard the crash, close to the junction of Raynford Avenue, then ran outside to help the group trapped inside the vehicle.

The 18-year-old female driver and her five passengers were taken to hospital after fire crews and residents freed the occupants.

Police said the six were "walking wounded" and not seriously hurt.

Sarah Shead, 23, of High Road, said: "I was on the phone when I heard a massive bang, we thought it was on the side of the house but then my mum said there was a crash.

"We legged it downstairs to help them, the car was upside down and all we could see was arms and legs flailing about.

"They were more in shock than anything else, they all got out and were walking.

"We saw the fire engines first, followed by the police and then the ambulance arrived."

Andy Cox, 33, of High Road, said: "I dragged two of them out of the car, they were really, really lucky.

"I could hear this thudding and at first I though people were stealing wheelie bins and dragging them along but it was the car hitting the kerb, you can see the marks on the road.

"There were four boys and two girls in the car and they were pretty shook up but not badly hurt."

Notts Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Inspector Jon Fryer said: "Police inquiries are continuing into how this happened, the manner in which the car was being driven and why the car was carrying six people in particular.

"There were no serious injuries, they had a lucky escape.

"There was a lot of interruption to traffic in the area because we had to have a lot of emergency staff there."

Elsewhere, a car collided with five other vehicles at around 11.30pm on Saturday, in Beechdale Road, Beechdale. One person went to hospital.

And on Sunday a car overturned on the A6097, in Lowdham, at around 1.10am. Emergency services took two people to hospital.
