It is understood he began a physics degree at Nottingham Trent University but did not complete it and was due to start a different course there in the next few weeks.
He was a pupil at Combs Middle School in Stowmarket between 1997 and 2001.
Ian Crissell, the school's head teacher, said: "He was a very conscientious student and liked by all members of staff. He had his whole life before him and he had worked in order to get himself into that situation.
"I can't begin to imagine how his family are feeling and our thoughts are very much with them. We send our heartfelt condolences to them."
Matthew attended Stowmarket High School between 2001 and 2004.
Head teacher Keith Penn said: "Our sympathies are with Matthew's family at this time."
His family still live in the town.
A tribute left on the Evening Post's website from his brother Adam read: "Goodbye my darling brother, I miss you so much already – Your two nephews and niece will never forget you."
