'Water board' conman steals pensioner's life savings

A CONMAN helped steal an 80-year-old woman's life savings from her house after telling her he was from the water board.

He was allowed into the pensioner's home in Newark Crescent, Sneinton, by claiming her water supply needed to be checked.

The man persuaded her to get down on her hands and knees to check under her sink and run the taps in her bathroom and kitchen.

It is thought an accomplice ransacked her bedrooms while the pensioner was distracted for around half an hour.

Around £30,000 in cash, jewellery and personal items, including her relatives' wills, were taken.

The woman, who does not want to be named, only realised she had been burgled after the man left the house on Saturday.

Among the items taken was a suitcase crammed full of £20 notes which the woman had accumulated over many years.

She said: "It is shameful that they go for old people and do so much damage to them.

"Surely they have got mothers and grandmothers – how would they feel if they had it done to them?

"I have worked all my life and saving up money and then this happens. I just tremble for no reason now, it has made me really ill but I am very angry."

She said the burglar pretending to be from the water board stood over her while she was checking under the sink and blocked the door with his arms. He is white and described as 5ft 10in, of stocky build, with short dark hair, an Irish accent, blue jeans and a checked shirt.

He did not show any identification before being let into the house around 9am.

Detective Sergeant Mike Allen of Notts Police said the burglar "deliberately set out to distract an elderly homeowner".

He said: "It is a truly sinister act, which has left an elderly woman not only without some of her life savings and personal treasures, but also extremely upset and feeling vulnerable."

Detectives are appealing for residents or dog walkers who spotted anyone acting suspiciously around Newark Crescent to come forward.

Notts Police have warned residents to be on their guard against bogus callers trying to enter their homes.

Dt Sgt Allen said: "These type of thieves target all residents, but specifically elderly residents and are intent on stealing valuables.

"The best way to protect yourself is simply by not opening your door to anyone who hasn't pre-arranged a visit.

"Alternatively use a security chain to find out what these people want before opening or shutting the door.

"If you suspect anything simply do not open your door, if you don't allow these thieves to enter your home they cannot steal anything.

"Then call the police and officers will respond and come and find out what is going on."
