A PROMISING amateur boxer died after having an asthma attack while on a night out with friends.

Dino Alonso, from Lowdham, collapsed in a bar in Clumber Street.

The 21-year-old was taken to hospital by ambulance where he was pronounced dead.

Mr Alonso had recently taken up boxing at Tommy Thompson's School of Boxing at the Fox and Hounds pub in Station Street, Carlton.

Today, his coach Mr Thompson, said: "I was just getting to know him and I was going to get him registered to be able to box professionally for the club at Christmas.

"He was getting on really well and was making a good boxer and he mixed in well with all the other lads."

He said Mr Alonso had only been training with him for six to eight weeks.

He had planned a sparring session with the 21-year-old at 10am on Sunday July 27, but Mr Alonso had died at hospital just after 1.30am that day. He had collapsed in the early hours of July 26

The 46-year-old added: "I got to the club on the Sunday and saw a group of the lads crying outside. I asked what was wrong and one of them said, 'we lost Dino last night' I was really shocked.

"As far as I know, he was out with friends and had an asthma attack and collapsed."

Mr Thompson said he knew Mr Alonso had inhalers and took them with him to boxing sessions as a safeguard but never needed to use them in his presence.

Messages have been left on the lastingtribute.co.uk website.

One reads: "To My Special Nephew. When you were young I used to tickle you, but I cannot tickle you any more. We will miss your smiling face. Sweet dreams Dear One. Lots of love Auntie Maria and Tony".

Another reads, "Mere words are not enough to express our true feelings, utter devastation. Dino was the kindest, most beautiful person we have ever had the pleasure of knowing. We will miss him so very, very much."
