Ilkeston hit-and-run victim had been at party

Monday, September 08, 2008, 06:50

A PEDESTRIAN killed in a hit-and run has been named as Stephen Brough from Ilkeston.

Neighbours say the 39-year-old had been at a party and was helping someone into a car when the accident happened on Heanor Road, Ilkeston, at about 12.25am yesterday.

Mr Brough, of Heanor Road, was taken to the Queen's Medical Centre where he later died.

A pink bouquet of flowers was left in tribute at a bus stop near the incident.

A note stated: "To Steven, Rest in Peace. What a waste of life. A man who fought for our country."

Friend Mandy, a visitor to www.thisisnottingham.co.uk, wrote in a tribute: "I only hope that the person responsible for his death will come forward and put his family members at peace.

"This was an horrific accident, that has caused so much devastation to his family."

Nearby Bowes Well Road resident Debbie Slack, 40, a mum-of-two, described the news as "awful".

She said: "That's no age. I cannot believe somebody would just drive away. It is disgusting.

"Surely you would know if you had hit somebody. I would be mortified.

"Somebody must have seen something.

"I heard screeching tyres – but you always hear that."

PC Bernie Glynn, who is leading the investigation, said yesterday he was hoping to get more details about the vehicle involved.

A woman from Heanor Road, who did not wish to be named, said: "I woke up about 8am and saw the police here.

"They were doing something to the drain, but what they were doing I don't know.

"There was a police van parked outside. They stopped us going up the road.

"It is shocking. From what I gather it was a party. I think he was helping somebody into a car. It is a great shame. It must be awful, somebody of that age."

Resident James Tew, 22, of Heanor Road, said: "There was quite a lot of police presence here. Everything was shut down. It is not that it is a busy road but there tends to be a lot of speeding going on here at night."

Paul Davis, 37, was killed in a hit-and-run on Corporation Road, Ilkeston, at 2.25am on Sunday, August 10.

Police are appealing for witnesses on the latest incident. Call PC Bernie Glynn on 0845 123 3333.
