Four years ago it was on the brink of closure.
But now the community-run Sherwood Playgroup has won praise from judges.
It won the 'Most Outstanding Committee Led Pre-School' in a scheme run by What's On 4 Little Ones, a website for parents of under-fives.
More than 1,500 nominations were received for awards and over 14,000 online votes cast.
"We had no hesitation in picking Sherwood Playgroup as winner of this award," judges said. "The tireless work of the staff has enabled the group to stay open against the odds, benefiting children from all backgrounds, including those with learning difficulties.
"We hope that they will benefit greatly from the award and go from strength to strength.
"This group have worked their socks off to turn things around after being on the brink of closure."
The not-for-profit playgroup is based at Sherwood Community Centre, Woodthorpe House, Mansfield Road.
Before manager Louise Holland took over in 2005, the playgroup was facing financial difficulties.
But new sources of funding were found and it is now working to full capacity, with some free places provided depending on means.
"When I joined we started to access different funding pots," said Louise.
"I have a teaching background and qualifications for primary and pre-school children and this helped with funding applications.
"We have been able to provide NVQ training for staff and the nursery has turned round so much. The staff are really proud and happy."
Overall supervisor Jayne Lowe has also been commended for her hard work.
There are 10 part-time paid staff at the playgroup and six volunteers.
The playgroup operates in a large hall and has a popular sensory room.
Mother of three, Sarah Mulholland, of Sherwood, said: "I looked at several playgroups before this one and Sherwood Playgroup is so good at meeting children's needs, my middle son has really blossomed."
Tania Ciolli-Leach, of Mapperley Park, said: "The staff are so dedicated and very sensitive to the children, their experience stands them in good stead and its such a good environment."
Sherwood Playgroup staff have further reason to celebrate after being rated outstanding in three categories by Ofsted.
Working in partnership with parents, helping children to be healthy and promoting good practice were highlighted during a recent inspection.
Ofsted's overall rating was good.
