Centres need council support

YOUR editorial comment (May 1) said it was "disappointing" that the Unity Learning Centre, which deals with Nottingham's most challenging pupils, has been judged to be failing.

We have sympathy with Unity, based on our own experience over the past 20 years of also dealing with challenging pupils.

It is not an easy task, yet, and we offer this to encourage Unity, there are professional disciplines which can be put in place to turn the situation around. It all begins by securing the attendance of pupils, without which courses will not be successfully completed.

We and Unity will continue to need the practical support and understanding of the city council as we both continue to grapple with these difficult problems on behalf of society.
