Beat bobby is among MBE recipients

A POLICEMAN based at Clifton Police Station for more than 34 years is among those to get the MBE.

PC Nigel Brown, 55, loves community policing so much that he came back out of retirement after being off for only one day.

His trademark bicycle and moustache have ensured that he has become a familiar face.

PC Brown said of the MBE: "I must admit it's a tremendous honour. It reflects on the team of police officers I've worked with over the years, and civilians, and the team I work with at the moment."

He also said he had received a lot of support from his wife of 34 years, Lesley, his son Ross, 26, and daughter Hannah, 23.

PC Brown began his police career in 1974 and has been based at Clifton Police Station since. In May, 1977, he was appointed as what was then known as a Community Constable – one of only four at the time. The Evening Post marked the occasion by gathering PC Brown and his colleagues outside the station for a picture. We then recreated the picture 30 years later.

As a beat manager he has responsibility for Silverdale and Wilford.

PC Brown, who lives in West Bridgford, retired after 30 years on December 31 2004, but came back to work under the force's '30 Plus' scheme.

"It would be a lovely honour to be able to work up to 2012 and help police the Olympics," he said. "It would be a lovely way to go out."
