SIX new social workers have started work at Nottingham City Council.

The authority now employs 90 social workers after extra investment in children's services in this year's budget.

A team of nine contact workers have also been deployed across the city to support them.

The extra posts were created to cope with an increase in referrals to children's services after the Baby P case in Haringey, London, last year.

But officials say recruitment has been difficult because of the national shortage of social workers.

Councillor David Mellen, portfolio holder for children's services, said: "We value the hard work and dedication of all our social workers and the contribution of all professionals in safeguarding children.

"This additional investment will allow us to provide a much enhanced service so we can deliver the best possible care to young people, children and families in the city."

Mr Mellen said the council was still recruiting and would like to hear from anyone interested in social work as a career.

“"my experience with social workers is that they just do not care, they should learn the basic thing touch, love, CARE, but my views are they are overpaid underworked ,

    P, nottm"

Yeah, of course they don't care, they are just in it for the huge salary and the easy life....... What planet are you on you utter freak?! Why one EARTH would someone become a social worker if they DIDN'T CARE?

You can't just "fall into" being a social worker, you have to study for years in a relevant qualification, so if someone didn't care why would they choose to be a social worker?

    Cretin.”

“Are there certain words you can't spell Michelle? They are such small, yet extremely important words that link sentences together: what about joining your local lending library - that may help your letter writing skills.”

“Of course we should look after vulnerabke children.
But not at the expense of old folk.
Billions are being poured into pre-school etc and we cannot afford it. Unless of course we make cuts.Where are we making cuts? In sevices to old folk of course!
Don't forget these same old folk have in the main paid in tens of thousands of pounds over the years because they believed in a System sold to them by the government that assured them an old age free of penury.
If ever we had men and women in charge who were looking anybody, including themselves, other than those who built the Welfare State with hard work and sacrifice those in power today are they.
The money many have contributed would have made them millionaires had they been allowed to invest it wisely over the years.”

“Dear Mr Mellen, since when did a 2% rise in actual social workers consistute a 'much enhanced service'?
And how many cases do your social workers each have on average... is the 13 cases per social worker that is recommended in the most recent review?
Please don't play lip service to our children's safety or claim they are 'paramount' or some other trite phrase. I welcome your answer to these two questions.”

“Well done Nottingham City Council and to your ninety social workers I would not have your job for all the tea in China, you are in a no win situation.
Mr S another fair and good comment.”
