This Is Live: Shining Examples

Friday, June 19, 2009, 09:30

THIS Is Live is our online video showcase of the best of the city's music talent and this week it's the turn of four-piece rock 'n' rollers Shining Examples.

Taking a seat with Zoe Kirk on the Rescue Rooms sofa this week is Steve Mitchell, Jon Dixon, Nosmo King and Bern Mitchell.

They're a relatively new formation, playing all-original material influenced by rhythm & blues, funk, rock, soul, and what is now widely known as Americana. The set list switches from neatly-crafted songs to extended guitar improvisations, pushed all the way by a swinging rhythm team.

The band includes highly experienced musicians who have played American, European, Japanese and UK tours - as well as a highly experience photographer and our very own Picture Editor.

Some of their former bands include Darts, Plummet Airlines, C-Cat Trance, Pugma-Ho, Visible Targets and Slip Hazard & The Blizzards.

Watch them taking Zoe through their musical archives and performing their track What To Believe.

And you are?

Steve Mitchell (slide guitar, vocals, songs), Jon Dixon (guitar, vocals), Nosmo King (drums), Bern Mitchell (bass)

What’s with the band name?

Catchy, commonplace and with slightly spiritual undertones. It seemed suitable. Describe your music and influences. The set switches from distinctive singer-songs to extended guitar jams where things are deliberately left to chance.

What are the day jobs?

Various and normal.
