Swine flu confirmed in ten city students
Health officials in Nottingham say the students have been given medical care and are "responding well to treatment".
Up to 50 close contacts of the students have received anti-viral drugs to reduce the risk of spreading.
The Health Protection Agency (HPA) has advised the university to tell students and staff about the outbreak but says it can stay open.
GPs were told earlier this month to send patients with flu-like symptoms to be swabbed for the disease even if they haven't travelled in Mexico or the USA.
The HPA, Nottingham health services and the university have plans in place to deal with cases of swine flu.
NHS Nottingham City director of public health Chris Packham said: "This needs to be seen in the context of ordinary flu.
"Normally if you have flu-like symptoms you will phone your doctor and that is what they should do here.
"I don't think there is anything to panic about. It is reassuring that things are being dealt with in this measured way."
Officials say staff and students should contact their GP by phone or call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 if they develop flu-like symptoms.
Students are being asked not to visit GP surgeries or hospital if they do have the symptoms. Each case will be assessed and, if necessary, testing and treatment will be provided.
Health bosses say good basic hygiene can help to reduce transmission of all viruses, including swine flu.
Residents should make sure they cover their mouth when coughing or sneezing, dispose of used tissues as soon as possible and wash their hands frequently.
Data analysis company Experian has also confirmed it has deep cleaned its offices after a temporary worker was diagnosed with swine flu.
It was not clear whether the case was linked to the ten students.
