MORE details have emerged about a machete attack in Malaysia which left a student dead.

Sarankan Sriskandarajah, originally from Sri Lanka, was studying at University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus when he died.

The 22-year-old had also spent an academic year in this country at the University of Nottingham as part of his studies.

He died on November 30 following an attack reportedly by three men on November 26 in Taman Tasik Semenyih, a short drive from the university.

The assault is believed to have been a possible case of mistaken identity.

Sarankan and his friends were having a meal at a restaurant outside the university premises when they were attacked by a gang wielding machetes, a university spokesman has confirmed.

The friends were at the 'Forest' bar and restaurant in Taman Tasik Semenyih, when the gang stormed in and started attacking the customers on Wednesday.

Security has been tightened up at campus as a precaution and police are increasing their presence in the area.

A day of mourning was held on Monday, December 1 being held at the Malaysia campus in honour of the Electrical and Electronic Engineering student.

And on Friday December 5 all lectures and other academic activities will be cancelled for a day of commemoration.

Professor Ian Pashby, Vice-President and chief executive of the University of Nottingham Malaysia, said: "We are all deeply saddened by the tragic death of Sarankan Sriskandarajah.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult time.

"The serious and tragic nature of the incident has shocked the whole University community, not least because we have not experienced anything of this nature in the past.

"The University has taken several immediate steps to address the current situation.

"Campus security has been tightened as a precaution. Dialogue has taken place with the police to intensify their visible presence in the area, and of course the University is cooperating fully with the police investigation."

There are currently 28 exchange students from the University of Nottingham UK at the Malaysia campus.
