The history of Nottingham's oldest hotel
THE Comfort Hotel, formerly the George Hotel, was built almost 200 years ago and has seen a huge range of celebrities pass through its doors.
Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton famously stayed there in 1969, drinking at the Peacock Bar before going out to the Playhouse.
Other star guests included John Le Mesurier, of Dad's Army, and the Auf Wiedersehen Pet crew. Jimmy Nail is reported to have stayed at the George Street premises for five months.
Back in October 1852, Charles Dickens visited the hotel, and a cheque for £37 17s, signed by Dickens' business partner, was later displayed there.
