A GROUP which helps blind people in Nottingham has started up again, seven years after it had to fold due to lack of volunteers.

The Nottingham Fellowship of Torch Trust for the Blind is now planning to set up home visits for those who cannot attend its meetings.

They are urgently looking for volunteers who could take people to and from the meetings in Daybrook.

The new group, which will serve the city of Nottingham, currently has about 12 volunteers and around 35 people who attend meetings.

They meet to socialise with others who have a similar disability, share any concerns or worries they have and have refreshments.

Alan White, 57, from Clifton, is registered blind. He said: "Lots of people say without the group they would feel lonely and they are happy to come to it.

"I feel the same because otherwise I would be at home.

"About 65% of people who are registered blind or partially sighted are not in work, so there is the potential to be forgotten and sit at home and not be contacted by anyone."

The group meets at Daybrook Baptist Church in Mansfield Road, Daybrook, on the third Saturday of the month. Anyone who can help out with volunteering should call Mr White on 0115 9143 875 or Ms Day on 0115 9815 322
