Davies: Forest will sign players

Saturday, February 21, 2009, 09:30

BILLY Davies today insisted he has faith in Nottingham Forest's ability to land the players they need to help secure Championship survival.

The club have not been able to get a single player that Davies has targeted since he arrived in early January.

And Davies admits it is vital for the Reds to bolster their squad with new faces.

But he says he has absolute faith in the club's transfer acquisitions panel to land the players they need.

"We have had one or two doors slammed in our face again in the past 24 hours," said Davies.

"But I am very confident that David Pleat, the director of football or whatever his title is now days – I am very confident that he, with all his media commitments around the world, knows the market place.

"David is looking and coming up with many different names.

"And I am confident that he, the chief scout and the board know exactly where they are going.

"I am very confident that this club will not only survive, but move forwards in the future."

Davies says he does have the final say on transfers and the players that Forest target.

"I did not come here to sit on the fence, that is for sure," he said.

"Being a 'yes' man was never on my agenda. But I am sympathetic to the board, I am sympathetic to budgets and how to work within them.

"But, the one thing I will never allow, is for me to be sacked for decisions I have not made, with regards to picking players.

"In the good old days, when football managers were football managers.

"Now you have chief executives, general managers, vice chairman - there are so many names in the mix now.

"I am very comfortable with what we have at Forest and the decisions that are made – we have clever men on the board, they know what is going on.

"It is unfortunate that we did not get players in January. But we move on, it is one of those things.

"The board know where we are going and what is required.

"We have an experienced man in David, who I have known for many years.

"He knows what we have got and what we need and he is working very hard with Keith Burt, the chief scout, to bring players in."

Davies says he is not surprised that Forest have found it hard to make additions in a difficult loan market.

"The loan market is a poor second option. It is a tough market place," he said. "We have already asked lots of questions and have been told 'no'.

"I am not surprised by the answers we are getting from clubs, because they are talking about injuries to their teams and the games they have coming up, then they start talking about massive salaries.

"But I will not sign players unless we have looked at them properly. Bringing in bodies for the sake of it is not something I am willing to do."
