DVD: The Beatles – All Together Now (3/5)

Friday, November 28, 2008, 07:30

THE marrying of the Beatles' music with Cirque Du Soleil was originally the idea of George Harrison, who, of course, didn't get to see the finished show. He also missed witnessing Yoko Ono suggesting changes during the dress rehearsal. While Harrison's widow, Macca and Ringo offered their thumbs-up at various stages during the creation of Love, Yoko seems to think that because she was married to a Beatle, it gives her carte blanche to dictate creative control.

It's one of the few reasons to watch this documentary about the making of the show, which starts 300 days before its Las Vegas premiere.

Interviews with the surviving Beatles and with Sir George Martin and son Giles, who created the 90-minute score from mashing up original master tapes, also throw up the odd nugget.

"They're looking after their own territory," admits Martin senior about the delicacy of doing anything new with Product Beatles these days.

What is frustrating is not seeing anywhere enough of the finished show. It feels like you're watching a DVD extra. It's not as if many of us have seen Love – it's barely been seen outside the US.

What we do get looks fabulous. Eccentric acrobatics, surreal costumes and remixes of A Day In The Life, I Am The Walrus, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Lady Madonna and Strawberry Fields Forever, with on-screen images of the Fab Four.
