60-second Q&A: Katie Melua

Friday, October 24, 2008, 07:15

What's the first thing you do when you wake up?

I get up and brush my teeth then grab a quick shower.

What have you done today to make you feel proud?

It's still early so nothing yet but I did remember the words to one of my songs which doesn't always happen.

Have you done anything recently to feel ashamed of?

I wish I didn't waste a lot of time on YouTube. I like a funny band from New Zealand. They sing but it's a comedy. They're really good and worth a look (Flight Of The Conchords).

What's your guiltiest pleasure?

I love stinky cheese.

What's your earliest memory?

Probably playing with my grandad in Georgia. We always played music-based games together.

What makes you angry?

Watching the news, mainly, but I hate hotel rooms when they tuck duvets under the mattresses. It's a form of imprisonment.

What is the most money you have ever spent on one thing?

That would be my flat in West London.

Whose career do you envy?

Winston Churchill – he's an incredible figure in history and helped Britain fight the Germans.

What is the worst film you have ever seen?

The Holiday. I hated it. I thought it was too soppy and predictable.

What's the best book you've read recently?

A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. It was amazing, I cried from the third chapter until the end.

What song makes you cry?

Marcie by Joni Mitchell from her first album. It's about a lonely girl and it's really sad.

If you could pass one law what would it be?

I would make drugs and prostitution legal so it could be monitored and be much safer than it is now. If it would be legal they could control it.

What would you want written on your headstone?

Someone who showed women in the East it's possible to be strong and independent. It sounds arrogant but it's not meant that way.
