THE RESULTS of a survey on Wilford Suspension Bridge have been revealed - and confirm various work is needed to restore it.

Severn Trent Water hopes to have a plan for its future by mid-December.

The bridge – a walkway which links The Meadows and West Bridgford over the River Trent – was closed in July for after Severn Trent received a report from Nottingham Highways Authority that debris had fallen from it.

A Severn Trent spokeswoman said: "The survey demonstrated that the bridge is capable of supporting its self weight but a range of different works would be desirable.

"For example, strengthening of the top boom which runs the length of the bridge, re-painting the structure with a modern protective paint system, replacing existing timber deck, installing anti-pigeon measures and re-pointing towers and approach structures."

“It is time wilford suspension bridge was re-opened, now it is found to be structurally sound. The works should be carried out quickley, it has been left to rust etc. for to long.”
