Supped at The Dragon, Long Row

Second time around for this very refreshing POTW, and well deserved too with its aromatic blend of American hops. There's no uncertainty that the awards this blonde beer has acquired speak for themselves with regards consistency and quality of a hand-pulled ale, including a National Champion Beer of Britain Award from the Society of Independent Brewers.

The easy to miss Dragon, a trendy non-pretentious elongated one-bar hideaway, is not only a friendly retreat for what I assume were at one time seventies revellers, but this city centre bar seems to attract the more orderly characters of today, both young and old.

A no-frills beer garden can be found at the rear complete with no-frills settees although they can be a bit hard on the backside…they're made from solid concrete!

The more obscure sounds of yesteryear are played on vinyl during weekend nights, whilst an eclectic mix of muzac can be heard at other times.

The food is particularly good and unlike claims made by some neighbouring pubs, their chips really are homemade on the premises. Not a frozen potato bag in sight.

Nottingham has nurtured several home-grown ales in recent times; some are better than excellent, and some unfortunately are not so good, but HP will no doubt stand out from the crowd for years to come, just like the infamous Basford-born brown sauce with the same initials…an ideal accompaniment to the Dragons' hand cut chips!
