A FIRE has broken out at a disused power station in north Notts.

Five fire crews from Newark, Retford and Tuxford were called out to the site in Hollowgate Lane, High Marnham, near Tuxford, at around 1.30am today after reports of a fire in an electricity substation.

It is believed a fault with a transformer inside the substation may have caused the fire.

The operation was scaled back by 3.30am, and Notts Fire and Rescue Service and site owners National Grid have decided to allow the blaze to burn itself out.

A Notts Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said it could take a couple of days for that to happen.

Notts Police say the fire poses no danger to the public and no electricity supplies have been affected.

Smoke is drifting from the site, however, it is not toxic.
