WHILE some flowers and plants are associated with certain times of year and occasions, there isn't really a traditional Mother's Day flower, according to city centre florist Pam Gibson.

So what should sons and daughters go for when choosing a plant for the big day tomorrow?

Pam, who sells cut flowers and potted plants through her business, Pam Gibson Floral Designs, says that typically feminine colours are a popular choice around Mother's Day.

"It is more the colour pink and pink flowers being the most popular as gifts for Mother's Day, and requests for spring flowers are also popular due to the season," says Pam.

Environmentally-minded mums may particularly appreciate a bunch of blooms which are in season.

"There's a great choice of bright cheery spring flowers as well as all-year favourites such as lilies and roses," says Pam.

As with most things, tastes in flowers and plants follow trends, and Pam has noticed some particular trends over the past few years.

"While roses and lilies are still firm favourites, customers of all ages really like the more unusual and tropical flowers now available," she says. "Our customers like our mix of a few blowsy, unusual, large-headed pink roses mixed with lily, and unusual long-lasting flowers and foliages such as pink kangeroo paw, anthuriums and tropical gingers."

For a gift that will last longer than a bouquet, potted plants are popular.

"Phalaenopsis orchid plants, along with the gorgeous fragrant flowering gardenia plants, have proved our best sellers again this year," says Pam.

However, Pam, a mother herself, is hoping to receive something non-traditional this year. "My favourites for this season, although not the longest-lasting flowers, would be a gorgeous monochromatic mix of double, parrot, frilly and lily tulips," she says.

Another tip is to note down your mum's favourites, and ask a florist for advice.

Pam said: "Women who order flowers usually request their mum's favourite colour or flower."

When it comes to buying flowers for loved ones, Pam says roses are still the most popular request but men are generally less choosy when buying for Mother's Day.

"For mums' flowers, men are usually quite happy to leave the choice and colour up to us," she adds.
