Great Gallery some room for improvement though

although an excellent artspace, the quality of exhibitions is often not the greatest and that is not just my opinion. Many of the rooms are poorly utilised or underutilised and given the cuts to basic services in the city there should perhaps be a greater attempt to get the Gallery to pay for itself or at least go some way to recoup the £25,000,000 that was spent on it. There has been an incredibly small attempt to give opportunities to much of the enormous creative talent in the area especially those of substantial ability but do not enjoy the patronage of the powers that be. There is ample space for quality workshops and not just directed at toddlers of a low skill base.Art education should provide opportunities to a broader age range and should be more affordable especially for those with talent whatever their background. The space was paid for by the many but largely appears to be for the indulgence of an unaccountable few. Perhaps when there is a genuine attempt to provide opportunities for the most able from the region(not just those with the connections and the CVs)in addition to visiting International artists(which again should be subject to public scrutiny)the Gallery could then perhaps TRULY justify a national and international reputation for EXCELLENCE. Having experienced the basement for the excellent Polar Bear gig I can compliment the excellent acoustics. The Bar is of a decent quality. I would say the gallery has fantastic potential but I think it's time for an honest and constructive critique as opposed to self congratulatory rhetoric from an unaccountable elite.

    Proud

“I am so pleased we have this place it really does put Nottingham on the map, and its not just all about the gallery, One of its strengths for me is that it strives to introduce local artist to exhibit and play which is encourage to all, the restaurant/bar is one of my favourite hang outs in Nottingham, the food is to die for all and all its well worth a visit for the whole family.”

    Notts Attraction

“I can't believe this is in Nottingham! It's such a great Gallery which is attracting a lot of attention for the city, as well as some big names in the art world. It's in a really accessible area, where passers by can view some of the work in the large windows, inviting them to take a look. The cafe, bar area is also a nice place to relax. Great for something to do on a lazy weekend.”

    Great for a change

“I always take friends here when they come to visit as it's a great different thing to do on a Saturday afternoon. The exhibitions change pretty frequently, although I must say some of the first ones around the space theme were really impressive. The shop's good too. Lots of things to make and do after an inspired walk around the galleries. ”

    Nice cafe

“The cafe at the contemporary had a bit of a flaw when I went there. Metal handled tea pots make for hot stuff. But the tea itself was lovely, the waitress smiley and the cakes great. Was very light and airy but more cosy somehow than the start gallery above. Nice spot to unwind.”

    Great for the city

“This is such a wonderful art gallery. As the name suggests, it shows contemporary art exhibitons - normally about two at one time, and they change every couple of months or so. There's been some fantastic work shown so far including David Hockney's. There is a fab cafe on the bottom floor as well that has lovely wines, good food and is worth a visit in its own right!”
