Young scientists take on green challenge at BGS
TEAMS of young scientists and engineers have been taking on an environmental science challenge at the British Geological Survey in Keyworth.
The three-day challenge was aimed at young people with an interest in sustainable use of natural resources, energy production, environmental protection and climate change.
Four teams of youngsters analysed scientific and technical information using computers which helped them to identify potential problems and workout how to deal with them.
Each team produced a sustainable energy plan for an island society, including reducing CO2, which they presented to a panel of judges.
The panel included James Strawbridge from the BBC's It's Not Easy Being Green", and two senior scientists from BGS.
Each team also built a solar oven, which could heat and cook basic foods.
Dr Tom Moat, from Natural England, presented the prizes.
