THIS is a photograph of Standhill Road (Top School) at the end of Morley Road, off Porchester Road, taken in 1939.

The teacher's name was Miss Borello from Italy.

I always remember an incident concerning an unruly boy named Wragg.

Miss Borello used to use the cane a lot, but when Wragg refused to hold out his hand he said he would not be hit by one of England's enemies.

Instead, he was taken to the headmaster, Mr Abel, who hit him on both hands.

I am pictured on the third row from the front, second right. On my right is Sid Blatherwick, on my left Ken Birkinshaw.

Three years later I was in the Royal Navy.
