Mills' long-time right-hand man, Darron Gee, has also left the club.
Mills, who won the European Cup with Forest, became York boss in October 2010. He led the club to promotion back into the Football League via the play-offs last season.
Former Ilkeston winger Amari Morgan-Smith has returned to Macclesfield Town after his loan spell with Blue Square Bet Premier rivals Kidderminster Harriers came to an end.
He scored once in five games for the Harriers – in the first minute as they beat Alfreton 3-1 last Saturday.
Dennis Greene has replaced Graham Drury as first-team manager at Boston United until the end of the season.
Drury was axed after a run of only two victories in 13 matches since December.
Former Stags midfielder Gary Mills has left Lincoln City by mutual consent.
Mills made 24 first team appearances having joined the club in the summer.
Tony Diagne has returned to Lincoln after a loan spell at Macclesfield. Diagne, who came through the Forest youth system, has also had a spell with Paris-based side FC Municipal d'Aubervilliers.
