Witnesses needed after rower's death

POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a car crash which killed a four-time world rowing champion.

Carl Smith, 48, of Jumelles Drive, Calverton, was driving when his TVR 350 car left the A6097 near Lowdham on Friday, January 1.The car hit a tree on Old Epperstone Road at around 1.30pm and Mr Smith was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

Mr Smith won gold medals at four world championships and was named international rower of the year in 1994.

Detectives investigating the crash are appealing for anyone who witnessed it, or who has any information about the incident, to call them on 0300 300 9999, ext 2225.

    “Im a friend of his daughters i live across the road from where it happend. yes i wont say too much .. He was trapped in the car and unconcious basically , few serious injuries. quite serious help really.”

    “I just wanted to say im so sorry to the family and we all did our best to help your dad. i went to put my flowers down today i just thought of you standing there lydia. I cant bare to think how you lot are feeling . I cant even put into words what i want to say to you all i shall see you all at the funeral. love to all of your family lydia x”
