Wellow resident calls for action after fourth crash near home
A RESIDENT whose home has nearly been hit four times by vehicles skidding on a bend has called for more action to make the road safer.
Notts County Council made white lines clearer and cleaned chevrons near Chris Ford's house at Rufford Lane, near Wellow, in December after two vehicles skidded on the icy road and crashed near his house over a period of just four days.
Another car then lost control and came through his fence at around 6am on January 27.
Two hours later, a fourth vehicle went through the hedge on the corner opposite the house.
Mr Ford said: "The measures that have been put in just aren't enough – the council has tried to make improvements and put white lines there, but people are just not slowing down.
"We need something there, like speed bumps to get them to slow down. The council are still looking at it, but there needs to be protection on the corner. Somehow, this has to be sorted out."
He said he had almost become used to the prospect of crashes.
"It's not shocking any more really – it's become quite a normal thing. It's just very concerning."
Four vehicles have now come close to the house because of a combination of ice on the road and excessive speed.
Mr Ford, 49, said: "I would say they have been about five metres away from the actual house.
"I've lived here for around 10 years, and in the last few years this has become a problem. I think it's basically that the volume of traffic has increased, and people are going too fast.
"This road leads from Ollerton to the end of Rufford Park, and people use it as a cut-through.
"I grit the road myself, because unfortunately it's not on the council's gritting route, but it doesn't seem to be helping enough in slowing down cars.
"I'm worried about my family's safety – my daughter has actually started sleeping upstairs because she is worried about the cars."
In mid-December, he had watched in terror from his kitchen as a van smashed through his hedge after it lost control at around 8.25am.
Both Mr Ford and Notts Police then asked Notts County Council to do more to ensure the road is properly gritted.
But in the same week, a car crashed through a second section of hedge and came to rest a metre from his home.
Mr Ford said he had been woken by an "almighty thud".
Councillor Richard Jackson, cabinet member for transport and highways at Notts County Council, said: "We are aware of the problems on Rufford Lane and are looking to see what can be done there.
"We have already cleaned the chevron signs and installed carriageway edge lines, and have done work to improve drain-off of surface water.
"This work will be completed this week.
"An additional slow sign has also been painted on the carriageway, prior to the additional sign travelling towards Rufford from Wellow.
"We are doing all we can do to inform drivers' behaviour further, and encourage them to slow down at this particular location."
