A MAN'S dream Caribbean wedding has been scrapped after egg-throwing yobs blinded him in one eye.

Nigel Spencer was walking home from his local pub when the egg was hurled from a passing car.

It smashed in his eye and damaged the retina. Doctors are uncertain whether he will regain his sight.

Mr Spencer was meant to be flying to the Dominican Republic to get married but could not go because the cabin pressure in the aeroplane could cause more damage to his eye.

The 48-year-old milling engineer from Stapleford said: "Everything just went black and I couldn't see anything. It really hurt.

"These kids just thought it was a prank but it has affected everything.

"We were supposed to be going away for two weeks and getting married."

The attack was on Sunday at 4.50pm as Mr Spencer walked home along Pasture Road. He had watched Derby v Forest at the pub with his son.

He said: "I was just walking along the road and you're not looking at the cars going past.

"Next thing I knew my son was in front of me and everything went black.

"I went straight back home, got cleaned up and went straight to hospital.

"I'm now on two lots of tablets and six lots of drops and have to go for hospital check-ups every day."

Mr Spencer suffered retinal damage and bleeding behind the eye.

He was meant to marry Johanne Berry on Wednesday.

But doctors at the Queen's Medical Centre told him not to fly because the cabin pressure could cause blood to move over his eye, blinding him.

Miss Berry, 35, of Stapleford, said: "It just proves how mindless these people can be.

"I am fed up about my wedding. We have been planning it since last year and everything is picked out and ready.

"Now we are having to get married at a registry office here because we cannot afford anything else."

Miss Berry's parents have had to fly out to the Caribbean alone as they could not claim on their holiday insurance because Mr Spencer is not a blood relative.

Mr Spencer said: "Johanne's mum has been ringing us upset every day, they are out there for two weeks."

Miss Berry said Mr Spencer had not been able to return to work.

"It is just a waiting game, we have no idea if his sight will come back," she said.

"What they [the attackers] did is absolutely disgusting."

PC Chris Edwards is investigating. He said: "This was an unprovoked cowardly attack which has left the victim with a nasty eye injury."

Witnesses should contact Beeston police station on 0115 940 0999."

“This is becoming a long line of coward acts in stapleford, I had my car shot at on Hickings lane a month ago which smashed front windscreen with my 7 yr old in the car! the police need to make this a priority or does it take someone to be killed by a coward to act!! But hey at least the police were kind enough to give me a crime number!”
