Volunteers recognised and celebrated in the city
THE Send project in Sneinton is a place where youngsters can try their hand at digital music production, DJing and MCing.
They can also have a go at break-dancing, graffiti art and film making.
Teenagers sign up to workshops as individuals – or projects can be run in schools, youth offending teams or prisons.
A new outreach project will soon be starting on Friday nights where the team will be getting teenagers off the streets to take part.
None of this would be possible without the tireless work of volunteers.
Send's eight volunteers help run the sessions at its studio at The Greenway Centre, in Trent Lane.
They run outreach courses, workshops and bespoke projects for teenagers across the East Midlands.
In April, Send was awarded the Investors in Volunteers quality standard, which demonstrates its commitment to volunteering.
Roy Bustin, Send's volunteer manager, said: "The award recognises the good practice in our volunteer management.
"With future recruitment campaigns it shows we look after our volunteers."
Send is just one of the groups being celebrated as part of Volunteers' Week. Award ceremonies will also celebrate the work of volunteers during the week, which culminates in a special day-long event in Market Square on Saturday, organised by Nottingham City Council and Nottingham Community and Voluntary Service (NCVS).
Organisations and projects will have displays and demonstrations raising awareness of their work and appealing for new volunteers.
Jon Stevens, Nottingham Volunteer Centre manager for NCVS, said: "Now, more than ever, volunteering has so much to offer – both to individuals and our local communities.
"There are hundreds of opportunities throughout Nottingham suitable for people of all ages and abilities.
"Everybody has got something to give and can make a real difference to the city we live in.
"Whether you are able to give a few hours or a few days, there are organisations and individuals all over Nottingham who would really appreciate your time and energy.
"Whether you are looking for experience, want to make new friends, or just give something back to the community, you may just surprise yourself with what you can achieve and the difference you can make."
