A VILLAGE community group has raised thousands of pounds to help pay for a wind turbine.

The Sustainable Hockerton group, known locally as Shock, has raised £65,300 to add to £86,250 which has been raised by people in the village.

More than a quarter of people in the village, near Newark, supported the proposals for the turbine.

Shock plans to buy and install a second-hand turbine which will have 29-metre diameter blades on a 31-metre tower.

It will be positioned more than 500 metres away from any house to avoid disturbing the neighbours.

It is believed the turbine will generate enough electricity for more than 50 homes, saving 160 to 200 of tonnes carbon dioxide every year.

Shock is still looking for further funding as the installation could cost around £225,000.

“Yeah, but they are a little odd aren't they.”
