IAN McParland emotionally dedicated Notts County's victory against Aldershot to Jimmy Sirrel, saying: "I am delighted for my old boss."

The Magpies' manager (inset below) said it was the most emotional day he had ever experienced at Meadow Lane, as the club paid tribute to Sirrel, who died last Thursday at the age of 86.

And he felt the 2-1 win, their first victory of the season in League Two, was the perfect way to honour him.

McParland said: "It was the right result and it was fantastic we could get that goal at the end.

"Because of the occasion, it was a very emotional day for the supporters who have supported this club for years and for people like myself who played under Jimmy for a long time.

"It was an emotional time and I am delighted for the fans and I am delighted for the boss, my old boss Jimmy. It was great."

McParland was equally delighted for his players, who staged a dramatic fight-back in the second half.

Michael Johnson netted his second goal in two games to equalise after Anthony Charles had put the visitors ahead.

And Richard Butcher struck deep into injury-time to seal the victory – and spark memorable scenes of celebration.

"We never do anything easy. We either score a late goal or give a late goal away," added McParland.

"They are the best team we have played against by far, and that's including Shrewsbury and Bradford City.

"They were a handful for our boys but we stuck at it. They worked their backsides off."

“Disgraceful attendance considering the circumstances surrounding the game. I sometimes wonder whether we deserve a football team given that some Notts fans couldn't even be bothered to attend this game. Genuinely thought we might get a gate pushing 5 figures. Maybe 6k is the best we can ever hope for nowadays.”
