YOU might have heard of planking and milking – but students hope to start a new craze ... smoothing.

Like milking, it involves tipping a drink over your head – but this time it's the entire contents of a bottle or carton of fruit smoothie.

  1. Smoothing

Smoothie operator: David Bothwell pours a smoothie over his head. Below: Students looking worse for wear on a night out.

But there is a serious message behind the madness.

The Nottingham Trent University students who came up with the idea are part of a group called the Healthy Eating and Drinking (Head) team.

They are looking to get the message across to fellow students that they need to drink in moderation and stay healthy.

"Smoothie is a healthy drink. It's the best way to raise awareness of well-being, hydration and healthy eating and drinking," said student David Bothwell.

The first session was being held today at the Robin Hood statue at Nottingham Castle from 2pm.

This will be followed by two health awareness events – at the university's Clifton campus on March 5 and the city campus on March 7. The students also have set up a website.

David, 30, said: "We hope it will catch on. We'll place videos on YouTube and perhaps it will take off in Nottingham and then at other universities."

The students are doing the campaign for their course.

They have enlisted the backing of Nottingham City Council. Staff from the authority's health team will help spread the message of their anti-drinking campaign.

Dr Peter Cansfield, consultant for Public Health Nottingham City, said: "This project, which focuses on peers talking to fellow students about sensible drinking, and the benefits of drinking more water, is a positive move which should help students make more considered choices about their own alcohol consumption."

“Daz, if you are doing this as part of a course then I can only presume that you are hoping to make a career in promotional work of some form. If so you need to be able to take criticism should you wish to progress. There is a considerable difference between attracting attention and getting a positive message across. I appreciate the target group you are aiming your message at but I would have credited them with the intelligence to take on board a message delivered in a more adult form. Just in case you are wondering I did work in that field and headed a number of successful campaigns.”

“I'm sure back in your younger years, you did things that the older generation failed to understand, complained about, raised their eyebrows and tutted at. Accept that you are not supposed to understand this, but that the students it is aimed at do and they get the message that these people are trying to send out. Stop being so judgemental and quite frankly a little bit rude. It is really not necessary when they are just trying to tackle a problem which I see mentioned and whinged about quite a often on these pages, that of students and their drunken antics around the city.”

“As you are not part of our target audience Mr Lawrenson I can only thank you for your comment and then dismiss it out of hand.”

“Having seen the clip Daz I can only repeat, a negative message. I think you need to get back to the picture board.”

“I am getting rather feed up with these student crazes. I was called out the other day when some of my tenants in Lenton found that their student neighbours were doing what I now understand is called Harlem Shaking. These incidents can be very frightening as this YouTube Video (not the incident in question but students somewhere else in Nottingham) shows. The problem is that people often do not know what is happening and what can be done to assist these students when they suddenly go like this.

“Daz, pouring a smoothie over your head gives a negative message in what should be a most worthwhile campaign. It does not convey a message about sensible drinking just one of talking down to or stereotyping students.”

“haha - got to love the regular thisisnottingham posters on here. You have the time and obviously feel the need to comment on most stories that quite frankly you likely know very little about or have little experience of. It is easy to be negative and pick the faults in things or criticize people but quite frankly does anyone else really care if you dont agree with a story? Not enough for you all to feel the need to post on pretty much every one on here! One might suggest you should look closely at story headlines and only read ones you think will interest you - thats kind of how this tinternet thing is supposed to work”

“@ by the crossed, in any group of people from any walk of life, you will find those who are ignorant of the needs of others. Views such as yours which tarnish all students propagate the stigmatisation of the student population and as such are unhelpful. We as a city should be encouraging graduates to stay in the East Midlands and recognise the valuable contribution they make to Nottingham life. I am sure if you took the time to engage with students you will find that the majority are respectful of the needs of others and Trent students give up many hours to help out with projects in the local community. I am not saying that we are all perfect, but please don't fall into the trap of labeling students as anti-social.”

“@Daz_Draycott 'the social life of students is an important aspect of attending university and a transition period in young peoples lives....... '

People would think better of students if they kept the noise down while experiencing this 'transition period' and showed some respect for citizens who have to work the next day. Screaming in the streets like a bunch of kids in the early hours does not endear them to the general public.”
