This is Nottingham

LAUNCHING into 2010 with our music video showcase, Zoe Kirk catches up with indie-pop singer-songwriter, John Marriott.

John's calm and quiet vocal style stems from years of trying not to upset his neighbours, he says. More recently, he has been developing an electronic sound.

Watch John chatting to Zoe on the Stealth sofa and performing his track Accept and Proceed:

And you are?

John, fairly ordinary guitarist, writer of extraordinary songs.

History?

Born in NG3 on Goose Fair Saturday. I've never been in a band as I have enough "musical differences" on my own.

Describe your music and influences.

I write the kind of songs I would wish to hear on hospital radio. Influenced by the usual suspects: Mr Vladimir, The Little Typists, Captain Tritone, Griffin and His Greasy Sheet of Paper, Dougal Douglas, Lance Corwin... those kind of people. Oh and H.V. Morton, obviously.

What's your day job?

In A&E at the Queen's Medical Centre.

Claims to fame?

A lifelong Notts fan, I really am the man to whom Rachid Harkouk owes a pound. FACT!

Which other Notts bands do you rate?

Well the last time I reached a state of near-levitation at a local gig was whilst watching Harry & the Last Pedestrians at the pre-smoking-ban Turf. So that was a while ago then.

Next gig?

Don't know at the moment but it WILL be put up on MySpace.

Music for sale?

There's always downloads on MySpace and I often have CDs at gigs, if you ask me nicely.

Web address?

www.myspace.com/johnmarriott

    “Totally unique and charming.
I too am a fan of Johnny Clarke, and now also a fan of John Marriott.
    Love it”
