VIDEO: This Is Live - Emily Martin
SOUL and blues influenced singer-songwriter Emily Martin performs live and chats to Zoe Kirk on this week's video showcase.
The singer, who made it through to the regional finals of Open Mic UK in Liverpool, writes songs about everyday life in NG5, the area of Nottingham where she lives. One of her songs refers to the "weirdos of Mansfield Road".
Watch Emily chatting to Zoe at Stealth and performing Guide Me Home:
History?
I started out in a band called Penny Black as the lead singer. We disbanded a while ago and I started playing solo in May last year.
Describe your music and influences.
My music is soulful and melodic, very vocal driven. My main influence is probably Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison's Astral Weeks.
What is the day job?
I'm a receptionist and marketing co-ordinator.
Claims to fame?
I met Sir Terry Wogan in Toulouse airport. I was on the way back from a gig with Ice MC where I met such 90s legends as Haddaway, Dr Alban and Rozalla Miller. Bizarre.
Which other Notts bands do you rate?
I love Natalie Duncan and Will Jeffery is fantastic. Cecille Gray are lovely. Loving Hymn as well at the moment.
Next gig?
I'm playing at the Concert For Life at Rock City on Easter Sunday, April 4 on the acoustic stage.
Music for sale?
CDs will be available soon, I'm just waiting on the printing.

“Nice songwriter.
Good subject matter.
Excellent vocalist
No disrespect but you should employ a guitarist as your playing lets you down big style and it's a shame because you could be superb.
Promising”
