VIDEO: This Is Live - Elbow Jake
COUNTRY rock singer-songwriter John Merry, aka Elbow Jake, performs and talks to Zoe Kirk on this week's This is Live video showcase.
Despite picking up the guitar quite late, John has found time, between working full-time as a GP, to pen more than a 100 songs. He has played in several bands and enjoys getting up on stage, but ultimately it's the songwriting that he feels most passionate about.
Only a few weeks ago Elbow Jake's debut album, Too Many Times, was rated the number one album on UK Country Radio.
Watch John discussing his musical interests and performing Lay Your Body Down:
And you are?
Elbow Jake is essentially my recording project. I sing all the lead and most of the backing vocals, I play guitars, bass, vocals, harmonica and keyboards. I also do the drum programming and all the recording and producing. All the songs are mine. There are a number of guest musicians on the album.
History?
I started playing guitar on my 30th birthday – having been bought one as a gift.
Describe your music and influences.
Country rockers like The Eagles, Neil Young and John Hiatt but also bits of English folk, progressive rock, classic singer-songwriters and even a bit of Pink Floyd thrown in.
What is your day job?
I'm a GP working in Wollaton and, yes, many of the patients do know that I do it. It's sometimes quite funny when they see me on stage and I know they are trying to work out: Where do I know this bloke from?
Claims to fame?
I was once on a skiing holiday where I met Timmy Mallett. He was at the height of his fame and was actually quite good value. He led the whole plane in singing the Chicken Song (from Spitting Image) on the way home.
