VIDEO: This Is Live - El Gecko
CHATTING to This Is Live's Zoe Kirk on the Stealth sofa this week are four-piece country rockabillies, El Gecko.
These guys have a contrasting mix of day jobs, ranging from mug making to truck driving – but unite for their shared love of country-inspired rock.
They tell Zoe about their four years together and why their rain-soaked Riverside Festival experience still remains their favourite.
Watch the interview and a live performance of their track, Said and Done:
And you are?
Ben Bennett (guitar, vocals), Phil Jackson (guitar, vocals), Dave Sidebottom (bass, vocals), Mark Joseph (drums, vocals)
History?
El Gecko started as a duo, with Ben and Phil, at the Turf Tavern about six years back. Dave joined on bass shortly after and a full band was formed when Mark decided we should play his sister's wedding. The many bands we've been involved in have included Magic Car, John Noakes Experience and Loose House.
What's with the band name?
It turned up unannounced, and kind of adopted us.
Describe your music and influences.
We're a disparate group with four lifetimes of influences. If Beefheart had got together with Hank Williams, Tom Waits and Eddie Cochrane, we'd have enjoyed playing support.
What are the day jobs?
C.A.B. advisor, cleaner, mug maker and truck driver in no particular order.
Which other Notts bands do you rate?
The Last Pedestrians and The Old Nick Trading Company.
