A MEMBER of staff at Nottingham Trent University is being treated for the symptoms of swine flu.

The university has notified all students and staff of the case.

The person affected has been advised by their doctor to stay at home to recover and the university is liaising with the Health Protection Agency.

Last month, 13 cases of the disease were reported among University of Nottingham students, while one Nottingham Trent student caught it.

Students at several schools in Nottingham have also been diagnosed with the illness.

Greater Nottingham was named an area of "sustained community transmission" last week, meaning that moves to tackle swine flu have moved from a containment stage to a treatment stage.

Patients with flu symptoms are still being offered anti-viral drugs but their close contacts will no longer get them.

People with flu-like symptoms should stay at home and not visit their GP, emergency department or other hospital department.

Anyone can check their symptoms by visiting www.nhs.uk or calling the flu information line on 0800 151 3513.

If you have done this and are still concerned, call NHS Direct on 0845 4647 or ask for a phone consultation with your GP.

The symptoms of swine flu are usually mild and people may want to treat it with paracetamol and rest.

Officials say practising good hand and mouth hygiene is key – so cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, use a tissue when possible and dispose of them carefully.
