TRAM workers are being urged to accept a pay freeze after breakthrough talks between bosses and union officials.

Nottingham Express Transit had wanted to change employees' terms and conditions, as well as scrap pay rises.

But now Tim Clements, an organiser for the GMB union, says an offer of just a pay freeze has been made.

It means a ballot will now be taken in January with the recommendation that members accept the pay freeze without any changes to their terms.

One of the proposed changes included reducing the amount of time drivers had between stopping driving and clocking off.

Mr Clements said: "It is a very positive step because we had got to a stage where our relationship broken down completely."

“eddie we will be first out of recession, gordon and caterpillar eyebrows said so,
if you think last year was bleak then wait until next year when interest rates go through the roof along with inflation.
then we will truly see who is best placed in the economic recovery.”

“The desire of some to see peoples wages and conditions of service cut is a real sign of the christmas spirit. One reason why the UK will be slower than the rest of europe to come out of recession is the concept of making the poor poorer which seems to be such a popular sentiment. The more the screw is tightened on the lower paid the longer the recession. The wealthy have everything so don't spend and the low paid take even longer to afford to buy - stagnation.”

“In many cities around the world modern tram systems run without drivers or conductors. Surely this is the answer to the union problem with the Nottingham Tram.”
