Notts' rising star Samit Patel has failed to make England's Test squad for their tour of India in December – but Ryan Sidebottom, Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann are in the 15.

A superb season with bat and ball meant Patel, 23, was tipped in some quarters to get the nod.

But while he has made a successful start to his one-day career with England against South Africa this summer, he will have to wait a little longer for Test recognition.

The second spinner spot has instead gone to team-mate Swann, who toured with England last winter.

While disappointed, knows he is not too far off earning a call-up.

"I thought I had a pretty good chance. You always hope you have done enough to get in the 15," he said.

"To play Test cricket at some point would be a great achievement – I wouldn't have dreamed of playing international cricket at the start of the year but I am in the one-day squad.

"I would have liked a few more runs and a few more wickets this season, although winning the championship was my aim above anything else.

"I'm not really a big stats man but I would have liked to have reach 1,000 runs for the season.

"I now just have to focus on doing the same things as this year – trying to work as hard as possible.

"I have to show that I can do it and push my claims for the Test team."

Notts' skipper Chris Read feels a Test call-up for Patel is only a matter of time after seeing at close hand this summer just what he can do.

He said: "He's come on fantastically well.

"He had an uncharacteristically slow start with the bat but his bowling has come on in leaps and bounds.

"He took himself off to India last winter, Bangalore I believe, and worked very hard for several weeks.

"He has been one of our finest one-day bowlers and he has also done a good job for us in the four-day team.

"His performance with the bat in the second half of the season has been sublime."

On Swann's selection, national selector Geoff Miller said: "I think Graeme has learned his game and learned about himself. He has developed his game and he will be absolutely fine."
