The CHANGEABLE weather has not been conducive to fly fishing at Toft Newton, where 59 rods caught 209 fish (av 3.5). But Pete Cowan took six fish in just a couple of hours, using the 'washing line' method on an intermediate line, small booby on the point and a couple of crunchers on the droppers.

Best rainbow was a 4lb 8oz fish which fell to Mervin White, from Bilsthorpe, on an orange booby.

At Thornton, 56 rods caught 97 trout (1.7). Once again the shallows along the Thornton Arm and wood bank were the best areas to fish. Despite the cold, the opening month fished well with 323 rods catching a total of 1,500 trout and returning 983 for an average of 4.6.

Foremark opens for business on March 6 and closes on November 28. Fishing is available from 7.30am from the bank and 8.30am from the boats. Around 4,500 trout have been stocked pre-season. Another 22,000 trout are on order of which 4,500 will average from 3lb-5lb. There will be a sprinkling of fish to double figures, along with 1,100 browns averaging 1lb 4oz.

There is a limited availability on season permits, with permits starting from £265. Contact 01283 703 202 for further information.

The Spring Fly Fishing show is at Newark on March 6 and 7.
